Black Scoter is primarily a North American Bird.  A close looking bird is a common Scoter the easiest difference to notice is the bill color pattern. The American Black Scoter knob is yellow or orange in a very square pattern  the Common appears as a brush stroke lentghways on the bill. They are separate Species
